Social Structure

'Society' as discussed in Wikipedia  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society), is of vital interest in relation to; 1) current roles, and 2) what functions and roles could (or should) be preserved if there are major changes in our world. Much of what comprises our current society is taken for granted, but examination of the evolution of society allows one to better come to grips with the actual underlying parameters.
How did we get to where we are now? What is under our present control? How can we use this structure or alter it to optimize, preserve, or repair and resume function in case of disaster and post-disaster?
